Scholarship for Peace and Security 2022
Conflict Prevention and Resolution through Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation in the OSCE area
In recognition of continuous underrepresentation of women and youth in the security sector, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) host an annual educational training programme for young professionals from all across the OSCE participating States and its Partners for Co-operation. The programme is delivered in partnership with other organisations whose work contributes to disarmament, non-proliferation and development-related issues.
The Scholarship for Peace and Security Programme offers training courses providing skills and knowledge on conflict prevention and resolution through arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation to participants with a specific focus on OSCE-relevant instruments. It contributes to creating equal opportunities for young professionals by strengthening young women’s participation and leadership in policy-making, planning and implementation processes and by highlighting the role of gender and diversity perspectives in international peace and security.
The Programme contributes to efforts aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality), 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) and 17 (partnerships for the goals).
How is the training programme structured?
The training programme is composed of two key components:- 1) An interactive online foundation course lasting 8 weeks (about 40 hours)
The online component includes self-paced thematic training sessions with weekly online meetings, engaging learning materials, exams, and regular interaction with the instructors and fellow participants.
- 2) An in-depth in-person course lasting one week to be held in Vienna, Austria (about 40 hours)
The in-person component includes lectures delivered by subject matter experts, interactive workshops and visits to Vienna-based organisations.
What will participants learn?
This hybrid course introduces participants to key conceptual and practical aspects of:- Confidence- and security-building measures
- Nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
- Combatting illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons
- Conflict cycle and modern warfare
- Disarmament and development
- Gender and youth perspectives
- Emerging technologies and other current security challenges
All participants successfully completing the training course will receive an official Certificate of Completion.
Who is eligible to participate in the training programme?
Participation in the training programme is reserved for nationals of OSCE participating States and Partners for Co-operation, aged between 22 and 32 at the time of application, who hold at least a Bachelor degree or equivalent. Previous knowledge of issues related to disarmament, non-proliferation and development is not required.
Participation in the online training course is open to both women and men; however, participation in the in-person training is reserved for women. 50 successful female participants will be offered a place at the in-person training in Vienna.
